Thundr Alternatives in 2026: 7 Options Compared
The short answer: If you like Thundr’s format but not its coin shop, OmeTV is the closest free alternative: random video with country and gender settings, and its FAQ says it does not sell “girls only” chats, but its home page asks you to sign in with Facebook, Google or VK ID. Chatroulette opens in the browser after an 18+ confirmation and has an iPhone app, which Thundr does not. For text without a camera, Emerald Chat has a text mode behind an email login and Chatib is old-style text rooms with no signup. Thundr, OmeTV and Chatroulette say they are for adults 18+. For a text-only conversation, ChatToAnyone (our own product) connects adults with a real person if one is online, otherwise with a clearly labeled AI companion.
Scope: this guide is for people who use Thundr, or looked at it, and want something different: no coins, no camera, no account, or an iPhone app. It compares seven alternatives on those points. If you want the wider field ranked from scratch, our Omegle alternatives guide covers twelve platforms, and our random video chat apps guide ranks the phone-first ones.
What Thundr is, from its own pages

Thundr calls itself “a free random video chat platform” where you “jump into one-on-one video or text chats with strangers from around the world” (its FAQ). When we opened the home page on 11 October 2026 it showed a Text tab beside Video, an interests box, a Country Filter, a Start button and a counter reading “28,980+ online”. Its tagline is “Vibe With Beautiful People™”.
Adults only. Its terms say the service is “exclusively for adults” and prohibit anyone under 18 from using it “in any manner”, under a heading “No minors – zero tolerance”. The same terms name the operator: Lightningware Inc., a company incorporated in Wyoming, USA.
Accounts. The pages say different things. The home page meta description promises “zero sign-up”; the FAQ says “Sign in anonymously, or link your Google or Apple account to start”, and elsewhere that all you need is “a username and password”. We did not press Start, so we cannot tell you whether a chat begins with no account at all.
How Thundr makes money
There is no subscription. Thundr sells coins, one-time purchases that its coin page says are final and non-refundable except where the law requires. In US dollars on 11 October 2026, 500 coins cost $4.99, 1,050 cost $9.99, 2,200 cost $19.99, 5,750 cost $49.99, 12,000 cost $99.99 and 125,000 cost $999.99. The FAQ says coins “can be used to activate premium features, filters and more”.
The main thing coins buy is a Boost, from 450 coins for 10 minutes to 7,900 coins for five hours. The Boost page headline is “Match *ONLY* with the hottest people on Thundr!”, and the FAQ explains that while a Boost is active, “if you are searching for beautiful women, you will be matched with women only.” Asking to rematch someone costs 50 coins, then 100 coins for each further request in the same 24 hours. Free coins come from a Daily Crate whose odds the terms publish: 5 coins 55% of the time, 250 coins 0.2% of the time.
Moderation, as Thundr describes it
The terms describe “real-time AI moderation” that generates a report including the violating user’s IP address and a screenshot of their messages, or a picture if they are on camera. The safety page says reports “may be reviewed by members of Thundr’s moderation team”, and its legal page describes a partnership with law enforcement agencies including the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The safety page is also candid that “no website or app that connects strangers can guarantee that every interaction will be appropriate or risk-free.” We have not measured how any of this works in practice.
Apps
Thundr links to one app: “Thundr: Live Random Video Chat” on Google Play, from Lightningware Inc., rated Mature 17+, with 100K+ downloads and 4.3 stars from 1.46K reviews when we checked. We found no official iPhone app: thundr.com links only to Google Play, and its FAQ points iPhone users to the browser. An App Store app named “Thundr - Video Chat Journal” comes from a different seller and is not linked from thundr.com, so do not assume it is the same service.
Pick an alternative by why you are leaving
- You do not want to buy coins for filters or Boosts. OmeTV lets you choose a country and set your gender without paying, and says it does not sell “girls only” chats. Chatroulette is free to start in the browser.
- You want text, not video. Emerald Chat has a text mode behind an email login, Umingle offers Text or Video with no sign-up, and Chatib is text-only chat rooms. Our own ChatToAnyone is text only.
- You are on an iPhone. Azar is an iPhone and Android app, and Chatroulette linked an iPhone app from its site when we checked on 28 September 2026. OmeTV’s own App Store link returned a missing page on 11 October.
- You would rather not make an account. Chatroulette asked only for an 18+ confirmation, Umingle says “No sign-up needed”, and Chatib uses guest names.
- You do not want a chat that sells matching by looks. Thundr markets “beautiful people” and sells Boosts to match “ONLY with the hottest people”. OmeTV’s FAQ says it does not offer gender-specific filters for a fee, and ChatToAnyone does not match by gender or looks at all.
- You want to talk across languages. Azar is built around translated video chat, and OmeTV’s FAQ describes a message translation setting.

7 Thundr alternatives, compared
Ranked for someone leaving Thundr: the closest free match first, then the options that change one thing Thundr does. Our own product is listed last, disclosed and unranked.
OmeTV: the closest free match, without a coin shop
Random video with free country and gender settings; you sign in first.

OmeTV is the obvious first stop if you like Thundr’s format but not its prices. Its home page lets you “choose your country, set your gender, or select ‘Couple’ mode with a friend”, and its FAQ says that, unlike some platforms that charge for “girls only” chats, “we don’t offer gender-specific filters”: setting your gender connects you with people of the opposite gender and is not shown to others. The FAQ also says video chat is free “with no limits on how long you talk”. Its Android app describes a monthly “VIP Lounge” subscription with a 7-day trial for more visibility; we found no price for it on an official page.
The trade-offs are an account and a camera. The home page shows a sign-in panel for Facebook, Google or VK ID with a box confirming you are at least 18, and OmeTV’s rules say your “real, uncovered face must always be visible in the frame”. The same rules describe how complaints work: moderators receive a screenshot with each complaint, monitor complaints 24/7, and users who receive multiple complaints in a short time are banned automatically. For a closer look, see our OmeTV alternatives guide.
Who it's for: Thundr users who want free filters on a large, well-known service and do not mind signing in with their face on camera.
Chatroulette: browser video with no shop in the way
Starts after an 18+ confirmation; apps on iPhone and Android.

Chatroulette predates Omegle and is still running. When we opened it in a phone-sized browser it asked us to confirm we were 18 or older and then offered the chat, with no login in front of it. Its homepage advertises country filters and AI moderation, and its terms, last updated 18 June 2026, say its services are intended for users who are at least 18.
Compared with Thundr it is the plainer option: one button, fewer extras, and an iPhone app linked from its own site, which matters if Thundr has been sending you to the browser on your phone. We have not checked what Chatroulette sells beyond the free chat, so read its current pages before paying for anything.
Who it's for: People who want the least setup, on a laptop or an iPhone.
Emerald Chat: text or video, behind an email login
A text mode for when you would rather keep the camera off.

If Thundr’s Text tab is the part you used most, Emerald Chat is the closest dedicated alternative. Its homepage says it requires “a simple account creation (email and password) to use our service”, which other users do not see, and it lists a “Gender Filter (Premium)” (checked 23 September 2026; the site showed the same steps on 7 October).
So it swaps Thundr’s coins for a premium plan on the filter, and asks for an email address up front. In return you get a text mode that does not depend on a camera, and other users see a username rather than a profile.
Who it's for: People who want text first and do not mind giving an email address.
Azar: phone apps with built-in translation
Random video across languages; gems pay for targeting.

Thundr has no official iPhone app; Azar is app-first on iPhone and Android. It is developed by Hyperconnect, which Match Group announced it would acquire in February 2021, and its draw is built-in translation between major languages. Its live counter read “311,959 are matching now” when we opened it on 7 October 2026.
It has its own version of Thundr’s economy: matching with particular countries and the gender filter cost gems, its in-app currency. The free tier works, but you take whoever the matching picks.
Who it's for: iPhone users, and anyone who wants to talk across a language barrier.
Monkey: phone-first video and text, after a login
Built for short conversations on a phone.

Monkey is built for phones. Its Safety Center states that it is “strictly for users 18 and older” and describes automated detection of possible underage users, followed by review and a permanent ban for confirmed underage accounts (checked 23 September 2026). Its homepage describes both random video and text chat.
Like Thundr, it puts a login in front of the chat, and we found no iPhone listing, so it does not solve Thundr’s iPhone gap. It suits Android users who want a phone-first alternative with a text option.
Who it's for: Android users who want a phone-first alternative.
Umingle: video or text with no sign-up
A newer browser site; the old Uhmegle site now sends its visitors here.

Umingle looks most like Thundr’s home screen: a Text or Video choice, an optional interests box and a live count (16,968+ when we opened it on 11 October 2026). Its home page says “No sign-up needed. Click once and you’re chatting.” and that “automated systems and human mods” moderate chats. Its terms, last updated 16 October 2025, say you must be at least 18 and that the service is operated by a limited company registered in England and Wales (company number 16783780).
It is also where the old Uhmegle site now points: uhmegle.com’s home page says “you can now use Umingle instead”, and its only button opens umingle.com. Umingle’s own pages do not mention Uhmegle, so we cannot tell you how the two are related. It is the newest site here, with no app and the shortest record to judge.
Who it's for: People who want Thundr’s text-or-video choice without an account.
Chatib: text rooms, no camera, no signup
Old-style public rooms and private messages.

Chatib is the opposite of Thundr in almost every way: no video, no pitch about looks, just guest names, public topic rooms and private messages. The rooms are a group format rather than one-to-one, but it is a real option if the camera was the part of Thundr you wanted to lose.
When we reviewed it for our Omegle guide we noted bot accounts and sparse moderation. Go in expecting a 2010-era chat room.
Who it's for: People who want text-only chat with strangers and do not mind a dated interface.
ChatToAnyone: text chat without video or signup
A safe-for-work browser chat that clearly separates real-person matching from AI companions.
ChatToAnyone is our own product, so this entry is not an independent recommendation and it is not ranked. It starts without video, needs no signup, assigns a random alias, and labels every AI companion throughout the conversation. There are no filters to buy: nobody is matched by gender or looks. The optional Plus tier adds companion memory, resuming a saved AI conversation, a longer chat history and priority matching, and our pricing page lists what it costs.
Human matching is limited to adults 18+ where it is available, and not in the UK; ages 13–17 can use the labeled AI route. The product is safe for work and does not offer an adult-content mode.

Safety: what changes when you switch
Switching platforms does not change the basic risk of random chat with strangers, and this guide does not measure how well any platform moderates. Thundr, OmeTV, Chatroulette, Monkey and Umingle each say on their own pages that they are for adults 18 and over; check the terms of any other service before you use it. A few habits matter more than which site you pick:
- Keep identifying details out of the chat. Real name, school, workplace, neighborhood, phone number and social handles turn a stranger into someone who can find you.
- Assume anything on camera can be recorded. OmeTV’s own home page warns users not to send intimate photos or videos to strangers because it “may lead to blackmail”.
- Know where the exits are. Find the skip, block and report buttons before your first real conversation. Thundr’s FAQ notes that blocking there is permanent.
- Read what is sold before you pay. A coin shop, gems or a “Premium” label tells you what the free tier leaves out. Paying for a filter changes who you see, not how safe the conversation is.
- If you are under 18, do not use any of these. The platforms that publish an age rule exclude you, and the safety case for teenagers on random chat with strangers is weak.
If something goes wrong
- Leave first, then report. End the chat, use the platform’s report button, and block the account if you can. Note the date, time and username.
- Sextortion and threats. If someone recorded you and demands money or more images, do not pay and do not send anything else. Stop replying, keep the messages as evidence, report the account, and contact local police.
- Anything involving a child. In the United States, report child sexual exploitation to NCMEC’s CyberTipline (report.cybertip.org, or 1-800-843-5678). Elsewhere, contact local police. Do not download, screenshot or forward sexual images of a minor, even to report them.
- If you feel unsafe or overwhelmed afterwards. Talk to someone you trust. In the UK and Ireland, Samaritans answer 116 123 free, 24 hours a day; in the US and Canada, call or text 988; elsewhere, Find A Helpline lists services by country.
What we saw on 11 October 2026
Short answer: Thundr’s home page offers text or video with interests and a country filter, its coin and Boost prices are published, and it has no official iPhone app. OmeTV’s iPhone link was still a missing page, and the old Uhmegle site now sends visitors to Umingle.
We opened Thundr’s home page, FAQ, terms, rules, safety, legal and coin pages and its Google Play listing, then the home pages of OmeTV, Uhmegle and Umingle, in a phone-sized browser (Chromium, 390 px wide, camera and microphone not granted) or as a plain page request. We created no accounts, started no chats and paid for nothing. Prices are the US-dollar prices shown to our request; regional prices were not checked.
What this does not show: whether matching works, how fast, who is on the other side, what a filter or Boost changes after you pay, or how reports are handled.
FAQ
What is Thundr?
Thundr is a random chat site for adults that matches you one-to-one with strangers over video or text. It is run by Lightningware Inc., a Wyoming company, and its terms prohibit anyone under 18 from using it.
Is Thundr free?
It is free to start. It sells coins, from 500 for $4.99 to 125,000 for $999.99 in US dollars on 11 October 2026, which pay for filters, Boosts that change who you are matched with, and rematches. Coins are one-time purchases and are non-refundable except where the law requires.
Does Thundr have an iPhone app?
Not an official one that we could find on 11 October 2026. Thundr’s site links only to its Android app on Google Play, and its FAQ points iPhone users to the browser. An App Store app with Thundr in its name comes from a different seller and is not linked from thundr.com.
Is Thundr safe?
We cannot measure that from its pages. Thundr describes real-time AI moderation, a moderation team that may review reports, and work with law enforcement including NCMEC, and its own safety page says no service that connects strangers can guarantee that every interaction is appropriate or risk-free. It is for adults only.
What is the best free alternative to Thundr?
OmeTV, if you want the same random video format with free country and gender settings and are happy to sign in. Chatroulette, if you want to start in the browser without an account. Both are for adults 18+.
Is there a Thundr alternative with text chat only?
Chatib is text-only chat rooms with no signup, and Emerald Chat has a text mode behind an email login. ChatToAnyone, our own product, is text-only one-to-one chat with a person where available or a clearly labeled AI.
