What happens after you press Start

The three steps above are the short version. This is the long one, written from how the product is actually built, including the parts that are less flattering, such as quiet hours.

1. An anonymous session is created

Opening the chat creates an anonymous session in your browser. There is no form: no username, password, email address or phone number. The session is what lets a conversation survive a dropped connection, and it is what settings, blocks and friends attach to. Until you start a chat, nothing is stored for you at all.

2. You declare an age band

You are asked whether you are under 13, 13 to 17, or 18 and over. The answer is a signed declaration bound to your session, not an identity check, and it decides which doors are open. Under-13s cannot continue. Ages 13 to 17 can talk with labeled AI companions only. Adults can also use person-to-person matching, subject to the next step.

3. Your region is checked on the server

Person-to-person matching depends on your country, which comes from our network provider rather than from anything your browser claims. In the United Kingdom, ChatToAnyone currently offers AI companions only. If your country cannot be determined, human matching stays off as a precaution. Operators can also switch human matching off for everyone during an abuse spike, in which case every conversation goes to a labeled AI companion until it is reopened.

4. You choose a language and a topic

Pick one of the twelve languages and, optionally, a topic: Casual chat, Vent, Practice English, Advice, Bored or Deep talk. The topic sets the tone for an AI companion. For person-to-person matching, the free plan matches on language alone, and Plus members can switch on same-topic matching so they are only paired with someone who chose the same topic. Matching with a person is exact-language: an Urdu speaker is looked for among Urdu speakers, not translated into English. The one deliberate exception is Practice English, which places learners from any language into an English conversation, because that is the point of choosing it.

5. We look for a person first

If you are eligible, you enter a queue for someone who chose the same language. While you wait, the screen shows a short animation; it is decorative, and the product says so, because nobody in it is a real waiting person. If no match appears within the short wait shown on screen, a clearly labeled AI companion joins instead. You can press “Keep waiting for a person” to stay in the queue for up to several minutes, and you can switch to AI at any point.

6. The conversation

You are connected under a random alias, such as “Teal Otter”, and the other person gets one too. A person never sees your email address, IP address, location or other conversations. Every message is moderated before it is delivered, and the check fails closed. Leave, block and report are inside the conversation. If it is an AI conversation, the “AI” label stays visible from the first message to the last.

Friends, invite codes, history and deletion

Invite someone you already know

Adults who are eligible for human matching can create a six-character invite code and share it with a friend. The code uses letters and numbers that are hard to confuse, so it can be read off a screen. An invite room is still a person-to-person room, so the same adult-only and regional rules apply to both people.

Keep in touch with someone you met

If a conversation goes well, you can send a friend request from inside it. Accepting a request keeps both profiles private. Later, either of you can choose “Chat again”: both of you open it, the service waits up to about 70 seconds, and it never substitutes a stranger or an AI if your friend does not arrive. A block from either side ends the connection.

Your history is yours to keep or remove

Recent conversations appear in your chat list: up to 20 on Free and up to 100, with search, on Plus. For each saved conversation you choose “Keep until I delete” or “Remove my copy in 7 days”, and you can delete your copy at any time. Removing your copy does not remove the other person's copy of a shared conversation. Settings also has “Delete everything”, which deletes your chats, profile and account; safety reports, bans and records the law requires us to keep are retained.

Photos, only where they make sense

There is no camera and no live video. In an eligible adult human conversation, photo sharing can unlock after ten messages, only when image moderation is configured, and every photo is moderated before it can be shown. Photos are limited per day and are removed automatically after a short retention period.

Saving an account

You never need an account to chat. If you want your conversations, and Plus if you buy it, to follow you to another browser or device, you can save the anonymous profile with an email sign-in link, or with Google or Apple sign-in where those buttons are shown. Your existing chats move with you.

Use it like an app

ChatToAnyone runs in the browser on phones and computers. On supported browsers you can add it to your home screen so it opens like an app, but there is nothing to download from an app store.

How this differs from the usual options

Most people arrive here comparing three kinds of product. This is the honest version of how ChatToAnyone differs from each, with the trade-offs.
