How does the matching work?
Two adults who chose the same language, both waiting at the same moment, are paired. Here is what that means in practice.

If no one is free in 5 seconds, Mira, an AI companion, chats with you while we keep looking. We'll connect you to a person the moment one is free.
- One-to-one, always
- One person to talk to, with no group chat or feed to keep up with.
- Matched on language
- Each of the twelve languages has its own queue, so you are paired with someone who chose the same one. Matching doesn't use your name, photo, gender or location. Your country is checked only to decide whether human matching is allowed at all.
- Your topic is a starting point
- Your selected topic is not shown to the person you meet, so say what you want to talk about in your first message. New matched human chats offer an optional shared question if you would like a starting point.
- Leave whenever
- Nobody rates you and there is no streak to keep up. Ending a conversation is one tap and nobody is told why.
- Come back to a good one
- If your connection drops, the room is held open for up to 30 seconds while you reconnect. Afterwards the conversation sits in your recent chats, and you decide whether your copy is kept or removed after 7 days.

- 1. You state your age band
- 18 or older, 13 to 17, or under 13. It is a self-declaration saved on this browser, not an ID check. 13 to 17 goes to the labeled AI companion; under 13 stops here.
- 2. The country check
- Human matching is allowed or not based on the country your connection comes from, as reported by our network provider. It is off in the United Kingdom, and it also stays off if the country cannot be determined; we fail closed rather than guess.
- 3. Language and topic
- The chat starts with your saved language, or your browser language on a first visit. You can change it and choose a topic in the chat. Practice English deliberately places you in the English queue.
- 4. The wait
- The searching screen shows how long you have been waiting and, once at least four people are searching in your language, how many. If no one is free within about five seconds, a labeled AI companion chats with you while the search for a person goes on for up to five minutes, and you are moved to the person as soon as one is free. Choose Only a person instead and no AI joins; if that search ends without a match, you are told so. English chats are busiest between 19:00 and 22:00 UTC. The animated avatars are illustrations, not people waiting.
- 5. The room
- You both get random names like Amber Fox or Jade Otter. A reminder in the room says not to share your name, phone, socials or address, and never to send money or gift cards to anyone.
- 6. Leaving
- End the chat, start a new one, report it or block and leave. The other person is told only that you left, never why, and never that you blocked them.
What should you say first?
New matched human chats offer an optional shared question. Start my answer puts a beginning in your message box for you to finish and send; it sends nothing for you. You can dismiss it and write your own opener.
If you came to discuss a particular topic, say so: your partner cannot see the topic you picked. The examples below give you a few ways to begin.

- Casual chat
- Something small and specific beats “hi”: what you are eating, what is playing, the weather where you actually are. Specific details give the other person something to answer.
- Vent
- Lead with what you need: “I had a rough day and mostly want someone to listen, not fix it.” It saves both of you from a round of advice you did not ask for.
- Practice English
- Say your level and what you want corrected: “I am practising English, please correct my grammar if something sounds wrong.” Most people are glad to help when they know it is welcome.
- Advice
- Give the situation in two lines without names, places or anything that identifies the people involved, then ask one clear question. A stranger's view is useful precisely because they only know what you tell them.
- Bored
- Offer a game rather than a question: a would-you-rather, a two-truths-and-a-lie, or a recommendation swap of one film each. Low stakes, quick replies, easy to leave.
- Deep talk
- Ask a question you would like answered yourself, what changed your mind recently, or what you would tell your younger self, and answer it first so it does not feel like an interview.

Who you can actually be matched with
Matching with another person is adults only, 18+, and is offered only where regional and operational safety rules allow it. Eligibility is enforced before you are ever put in the queue, not asked politely afterwards. Under-18s who are 13 or over can use the clearly labeled AI companion instead; under-13s cannot use the product at all.
Every message is screened before the other person sees it, and the screen fails closed: if the safety check is unavailable, the message is held back and you are told why. Blocking takes two taps (Block, then a confirming tap) and keeps the two of you apart in the queue until you remove the block yourself. Reporting files the conversation, with a snapshot of the reported message, in a moderator review queue. We can turn human matching off during a safety review. AI companions remain clearly labeled wherever they are offered.

Is it free to talk to strangers here?
Yes. Free text chat and human matching where available need no account, and there is no trial timer.
Is this random text chat with people?
Yes. When you look for a person, you join the queue for your language instead of choosing from profiles, and a topic narrows it only with the optional Plus topic filter. It is random text chat, never random video.
Will I be switched to AI if nobody is free?
If no one is free within about five seconds, a labeled AI companion chats with you while the search for a person goes on for up to five minutes, and you are moved to the person if one is found. Choose Only a person to wait without AI; if that search ends without a match, you see a notice. AI companions carry a permanent AI badge.
Do I have to register?
No. You are given a random alias, and no email address or phone number is required to start a conversation.
Is there video chat?
No, and there will not be. This is text-first by design. Photos can be shared only after 10 messages in an eligible adult human conversation, and every photo is moderated before display.
How do I know if I am talking to a real person or an AI?
Because we tell you, in the room, for the whole conversation. AI companions carry a permanent AI badge that is stamped by the server, not by the model, so it cannot be talked out of it. An AI companion will never deny being an AI.
What if someone is abusive?
Block them in two taps and you will not be matched with each other again unless you remove the block. Report them and the conversation goes to a moderator review queue, with a reason you choose: inappropriate, harassment, sexual content, child safety, spam or other. Messages are screened before display, so a lot of it never reaches you in the first place.
Is this a chat room?
No. There are no group rooms, public lobbies or channels. Each conversation is between you and one other participant: one person when human matching finds you a match, or one clearly labeled AI companion. With one other participant, there is one person to block or report, and nothing you write is broadcast to a crowd.
Can I choose who I talk to?
You can choose a language and a topic. You cannot filter people by gender, age or appearance: that turns a conversation product into a dating one, and this is not that.
Can I talk only to people who picked the same topic?
That option exists as part of Plus: “Match my selected topic only” waits for someone who chose the same topic, and it will not broaden the search or switch you to AI. It can take longer, and if nobody with that topic connects in time you are told so. Everyone else is matched by language, with the topic used only as a starting point.
What is the Practice English topic?
It places you in the English queue whatever language you chose, so you can practise with other English speakers. It is the only topic that changes which queue you join, and saying your level in your first message helps the other person pitch the conversation.
Can I talk to the same person again?
Only if you both want to. Two people can become friends inside the product; either of you can then press Chat again, and we wait up to 70 seconds for the other to do the same. That route never connects you to a stranger or an AI, and the usual age and block checks still apply.
Why can I not get a human match right now?
Human matching is 18+ where it is available. It is off in the United Kingdom, off when your country cannot be determined, and can be switched off for everyone during a safety review. It also depends on someone else waiting in your language at the same moment. In each case you can still talk to a labeled AI companion.
Is there a safe app for chatting with strangers?
